Some History of Hadleigh Tennis Club
Tennis tournaments were played on the Cricket Meadow in Hadleigh as early as 1892. The current Club can trace it’s origins back to 1911 when tennis was played on a court in Calais Street.
There were a number of private clubs playing on court No. 1 at Calais Street, Hadleigh, which was owned firstly by Mr Bob Kersey and then by Mr Cecil Gynn. This was the only court at this time and the above private clubs played there until the Council acquired the court. They invited all the various Clubs to join together and reform the Hadleigh Lawn Tennis Club and as a result of this amalgamation, two more hard courts were put down.
The original Club was suspended at the beginning of the First World War and the club trophies were deposited in the bank and did not surface again until about 1954. The newly formed tennis committee, after a great deal of difficulty, were able to trace the last trustees of the club trophies and so were able to retrieve the trophies from the bank.
The H.L.T.C continued on these courts for a number of years and with the growth of people playing tennis, two more courts were added, eventually leading to the closure of the single court. After petitioning the council, a Pavilion was built which not only benefited club members but was also open to members of the public.
At some point during this time (no records are available) the Club changed its name and became Hadleigh Tennis Club, under which the club operates today.
A major milestone was reached in 1988 when the then committee were able to negotiate with Hadleigh Town Council a new site for tennis in the community at the Layham Road Sports Ground. The site comprises three all-weather floodlit tennis courts with shared changing facilities with other local sports clubs. This is now the home of Hadleigh Tennis Club.
1999 proved to be a significant date in the club's history. The healthy state of the club enabled it to finance the provision of their own Clubroom, which was opened early that year.
In 2008 after many years of hard work by the Club Committee under the Chairmanship of Peter Richards the courts were relaid and refurbished to their current glory.
